From August 23 to September 27, 2023, the Andrey Sheptytskyi National Museum in Lviv will host a large-scale exhibition project “Mykhailo Zhuk – Herald of the Renaissance”
The exhibition is devoted to the 140th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Ukrainian painter and graphic artist of the modernist era, master of book design, active public figure and writer Mykhailo Zhuk. The project was initiated by the Odessa Museum of Modern Art and implemented in cooperation with the National Art Museum of Ukraine with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Fund.
Mykhailo Zhuk’s legacy as a Ukrainian artist was forcibly forgotten during decades of Soviet repression. However, his work clearly reflects the multidimensionality and variety of tendencies of Ukrainian modernism. Mykhailo Zhuk’s art, formed under the influence of the Kraków Secession, has a unique sound, is remembered for its elegiac mood, originality of drawing and color, and charming floral ornamentation.
The exhibition became part of a large project of the same name of the Museum of Modern Art of Odessa, created with the support of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts for the fullest possible representation of the artistic and cultural realms mastered by the artist and the development of his creative heritage.
The exposition was formed by about 200 works of Mykhailo Zhuk from the collections of the Museum of Modern Art of Odessa, the National Art Museum of Ukraine (Kyiv), the National Museum in Lviv named after Andrey Sheptytskyi, the Odesa Literary Museum, the New ART Gallery (Kyiv), private collections of the Markovy family ( Kyiv), Vitaly Lisnychyo (Odesa), Roksolany Lemyk (Lviv). The exposition is complemented by photographs from the collection of the Chernihiv Literary Memorial Museum-Reserve of M.M. Kotsyubinsky.
The curator of the exhibition is the head of the research department of 19th-early 20th century art of NAMU, candidate of art history Olena Kashuba-Volvach.
The exhibition project will last until September 27.
Address of the museum: Lviv, 20 Svoboda Avenue.
