The “Origins” exhibition allows you to see ancient objects (54 storage units) that were probably displayed in the very first exhibition of the museum!
125 years ago, on August 5, 1899, in honor of the opening of the 11th Archaeological Congress, Vikenty Khvoika presented an exhibition in the halls of the still unfinished Kyiv City Museum of Antiquities and Arts. No catalogs or indexes were issued for this exposition, and the exhibited objects started the collection of the modern National Museum of the History of Ukraine. The final resolution of the congress stated: “The museum was opened thanks to the work of Bohdan Khanenko and Vikenty Khvoika.”
Currently, only a small, but quite meaningful part of the exposition is presented in the walls of NAMU. Flint tools from the Kyiv-Kyriliv Paleolithic site (24,000-23,000 years ago) and objects of the Trypillia culture are worthy of attention. The exhibition also features Scythian antiquities discovered in mounds near the village. Vovkivtsi in Sumy Oblast. In addition, very interesting documents related to the museological activities of Vikenty Khvoika, stored in the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, are presented.
