Discussion “How to talk about the Crimean Tatar heritage in the context of the history of Ukraine?”

Discussion “How to talk about the Crimean Tatar heritage in the context of the history of Ukraine?”

Friends, we invite you to the next conversation as part of our anniversary Public Program! The event will take place on December 6, at 4:00 PM.

Last year, NAMU hosted a round table “Cultural Reception of Crimea: Decolonial Aspect”, which brought together Crimean Tatar and Ukrainian researchers and opinion leaders. During the round table, a number of topical issues were raised, which demonstrated the need for further understanding of Crimea, Crimean Tatar heritage in the Ukrainian context. At the same time, it became clear how insufficiently developed the terminology, periodization, and assessment of relations between Ukraine and Crimea are in historical and cultural terms. At the same time, the Crimean Tatar heritage is becoming increasingly visible to the general public, in particular through museum exhibitions and publications, which additionally encourages the search for new approaches and methods.

At the discussion, we plan to discuss the following questions:

📢 How is Crimean Tatar history and art presented in Ukrainian museums?

📢 How can we talk about Crimean Tatar heritage in the absence of artifacts?

📢 What is the terminology for our common history – Ukraine and Crimea, Southern Ukraine, …?

📢 How do we talk about periodization, and what place does the Steppe, the Crimean Khanate and other state and territorial formations occupy in it?

📢 What methodology should we use when talking about the reflection of Crimea in Ukrainian art? Especially after 1944?
