Discussion «Ukrainian 1920s: national revival or tragedy?»

Discussion «Ukrainian 1920s: national revival or tragedy?»

Our public program on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the museum continues! Already this Friday, we invite you to the next discussion.

Two stages can be distinguished in Ukrainian modernism. The first period spans 1900–1917 and is a time of free creative experimentation, manifested in the innovative ideas and practices of artists.

The second stage covers the period from the formation of the independent Ukrainian state (1917) to mass repressions by the Soviet authorities in the 1930s. At this time, avant-garde ideas spread in Ukrainian literature, cinema, theater, art, and architecture. Although the defeat of the Ukrainian Revolution led to the loss of independence, it did not cause the decline of the national movement in the Ukrainian SSR.

The development of national institutions in the Ukrainian state gave a national-state direction to the cultural movements of the 1920s and the first half of the 1930s. In response to these trends, the Soviet government introduced a policy of “indigenization” in an attempt to strengthen its power in Ukraine. In the 1920s, there was a project to create a new cultural and social identity, and artistic discussions became a reason for political persecution.

During the discussion, we will discuss the following questions:

📢 What periodization should be applied to the art/culture of 1900-1930s?

📢 Currently, a new stereotype is being formed that the policy of indigenization (Ukrainization) has caused a cultural boom, national revival, rapid development… Can we so categorically assert this? What critical approach should be used in research?

📢 What is socialist realism – an artistic style, a socio-cultural phenomenon or just the art of the era of socialism/totalitarianism?

📢 Let’s pay attention to NEP. Can we claim that many things in the cultural processes of the 1920s began precisely with him?

📢 Did the national revival begin in the 1920s or at the beginning of the 20th century, when publicists raised the question of Ukrainian style?
