Lecture “Cossack age in Ukrainian painting of the 19th – early 20th centuries”

Lecture “Cossack age in Ukrainian painting of the 19th – early 20th centuries”

We start the 2023 museum lecture course with topical theme: we will talk about the image of Cossacks and its reinterpretation through the ages.

In order to reproduce the pages of national history in painting, artists of the 19th century sought inspiration from various sources. Among them are monuments of the past and ancient architecture, landscapes and nature of Ukraine, romantically understood as silent witnesses of ancient events, Cossack poems and songs, works of famous and anonymous countrymen-historians.

It was in the literature and art of the 19th and early 20th centuries that the universal image of the Cossack and the Cossack era was formed, which completely dominates our imagination to this day. It was then that the Cossack period was recognized as a key stage of national formation and a pillar of national self-awareness.

In the lecture, we will trace how the theme of Cossacks was reflected in the works of Taras Shevchenko, Serhiy Vasylkivskyi, Mykola Pymonenko, Oleksandr Murashko, Mykola Ivasyuk and other artists – classics of Ukrainian art.

🔸 Lecturer: Lesia Tolstova, Deputy General Director for Scientific Work of NAMU. She is a researcher who for about 20 years has been engaged in the preservation and study of the museum collection from the period of the 19th – early 20th centuries, as well as its popularization in exhibitions, lectures and publications. Lesya Tolstova’s scientific interests are focused on the Kyiv School of Drawing (1875–1901) and the work of Kyiv artists, including Mykola Murashko, Hryhoriy Dyadchenko, Serhii Vasylkivskyi, Ivan Seleznyov, Petro Nilus, Kyriak Kostandi and others.
