We are pleased to invite you to a new event as part of the “Unfinished Stories: New Works from the Collection” series.
“Healing with provocation is more necessary than indulging in infantile fantasies,” said Lviv artist Ihor Podolchak from the steps of our museum on June 23, 1994, during the action “Mausoleum for the President” organized by the Masokh Foundation. For an artist, provocation is the most effective way to make society react to complex and painful topics.
This approach encompasses all of Ihor Podolchak’s work: graphics, photography, art events and performances, curatorial projects, scripts, and films. Recently, the NAMU collection received etchings by the artist, in which he develops the themes of Eros and Thanatos (pleasure and death). Later, they were continued in his cinematic work, video art, and actions. Podolchak is the director of three films – ‘Merry-Go-Round’ (2017), ‘Delirium’ (2012) and ‘The Ladies-in-waiting’ (2008), which we will offer you to watch during the presentation.
In addition to the works of Ihor Podolchak, we offer to see the works of another artist in whose life artistic Lviv played an important role – Mykola Kumanovs’kyi (1951-2016). He was an artist of an extremely wide range, a poet, an exhibition organizer, and most of his life was connected with Lutsk. However, it was in Lviv that he received his education and became close to the underground circle, becoming its active participant. Kumanovs’kyi was close to the ideas of drama and transience of human existence, absurdism, and his works are closely connected to the Lviv modernist tradition, in particular, in terms of experimentation with different forms and images.
The exhibition will feature etchings by Ihor Podolchak “Catalog of Architectural Details No. 6” 1990 (a gift from Konstiantyn Akinsha), “Exorcism” from 1992, and a collage from the 1980s by Mykola Kumanovs’kyi (the latter was donated to the museum by Leonid Koms’kyi). In addition, the exhibition will be complemented by other graphic works by Podolchak, which were previously donated to the museum’s collection by the author himself, and video art related to the history of our museum.
We invite you to see selected works by Lviv art provocateurs on Saturday, November 11 from 12:00 to 17:00. Also in the program:
