Unfinished Stories: New Works from the Collection. Odesa School of Painting: Lev Mezhberg

Unfinished Stories: New Works from the Collection. Odesa School of Painting: Lev Mezhberg

We are pleased to invite you to a new event as part of the ‘Unfinished Stories: New Works from the Collection’ series.

Lev Mezhberg is a representative of the Odesa school of painting, whose works combine impressionistic perception of nature and philosophical themes. In his still lifes and cityscapes, the artist paid special attention to solving purely pictorial problems – he was interested in the tonality and correlation of light and shadow.

Lev Mezhberg was close to the circle of Jewish artists in Odesa who viewed art as a parable, as a symbol. Through this view, the city depicted by Mezhberg becomes ghostly, and one can only return to it in a dream.

After the artist’s death, his widow transferred a large group of works to Ukraine. About a hundred works were distributed between two Ukrainian museums – NAMU and the Odesa National Art Museum. We sincerely thank the artist’s wife Asia Mezhberg and Oleksandr Demko for such a valuable gift!

NAMU received 50 works, seven of which we invite you to see next Saturday, November 4, from 12:00 to 17:00. We also invite you to join the following museum events:
🔸 14:00 – a master class for children and adults “City of Memories” based on the works of Lev Mezhberg, where participants will draw with graphic materials.

🔸 17:00 – a presentation of Lev Mezhberg’s works with the participation of researcher Hanna Aliieva and a screening of the film The First Floor (1990) by Igor Minaiev, created at the Odesa Film Studio. The film was included in the ‘Directors’ Fortnight’ official program at the Cannes Film Festival in 1990. The film will be presented by Oleh Chornyi, and a copy was kindly provided by Dovzhenko Center.

🔸During the day, visitors can also talk to the mediators, ask questions about the works, and learn more about the artist.

📌Cost: visit to the exhibition – 60 UAH, presentations (including film screening) – 90 UAH, master class – 150 UAH.

🔸Register here.

📌 Unfortunately, for technical reasons, the museum is temporarily unable to accept card payments on the spot. At the moment, you can pay in cash or by card transfer.

📌 In the event of an air raid alert, we ask all visitors to immediately proceed to a shelter. The nearest shelters are located at Khreshchatyk Street, 4 (underground passage near the Dnipro Hotel) and at the Maidan Nezalezhnosti subway station.

📌 If less than 60 minutes of the event have passed at the time of the air raid alert, we will continue the lecture after the air raid is over or continue on another day. If the event lasted 60 minutes or more, it is considered to have taken place.

You can get to the museum through the service entrance located at the back of the building.
